In October, the mountains look like they are on fire with the bright color of the trees, but the weather is only getting colder. If you are looking for a hot tub that can stand up to the temperatures of Colorado in the winter, you need a tub with better insulation. At Wind River Spas in Denver, our spas are built in Colorado, for Colorado. We have solved the problem of insulating during sub-freezing temperatures and have created a unique 5-layer system that keeps your tub ready to go all winter. We can’t wait to help you find an energy-efficient spa that fits your lifestyle and your climate!

The Challenge of Colorado Winters

One of the biggest challenges of living on the Front Range is the changeable weather. During the winter, you can enjoy a bright, sunny, 70° day, and find your yard covered in snow the next. We experience everything from sweltering heat and bright UV rays that damage certain materials to sub-zero temperatures that freeze anything left outside.

We also have the challenge of pests like rodents and wasps to contend with, all of which would be happy to take up residence next to the warm plumbing of a hot tub in the middle of a cold spell. With all of these challenges, simple spray foam insulation just isn’t going to cut it, especially if you want to be able to service your hot tub without too much hassle.

Our Five-Stage Insulation for Cold Nights

Our proprietary five-stage insulation is the reason that our customers in Indian Hills were able to get through the March 2003 snowstorm with no freeze damage to their spas. It worked then, and it works now. We also offer a 3-year warranty with all of our energy-efficient spas to protect against freeze-ups. Our insulation includes:

1. High-Density Closed-Cell Structural Foam

You may be familiar with the typical spray foam that is used in hot tubs. This type of foam is inferior in our opinion because it isn’t very dense and it acts like a sponge, keeping moisture (and mold) hidden away if the plumbing ever starts leaking. Our foam is different. Our tubs are sprayed first with 5-pound density closed-cell structural foam, which is ten times denser than regular foam. It creates an ultra-dense layer that provides superior heat retention and gives the tub more durability.

2. Insulation Air Cavity

Inside the cabinet area of our Denver hot tubs is an air cavity that traps heat and acts as an additional layer of insulation. This design not only keeps warmth inside, but also allows for easy access to 100% of the plumbing in your tub. Leaks are often inevitable, given enough time, and many of our customers can even handle minor fixes themselves because of the easy-to-access plumbing.

3. Bead-Board Foam Barrier

Next, we add a 2-inch thick beadboard, which is a type of insulating foam that sits between the perimeter supports. This layer functions as a thermal barrier that blocks warm air from escaping the air cavity. This layer helps keep energy efficiency high and operating costs low.

4. Plastic Vapor Barrier

Next is a plastic vapor barrier that surrounds the beadboard panels and creates a tight seal that prevents any heat loss. This barrier helps lock in warmth, and it also protects all of the internal components from moisture and environmental damage.

5. Molded Plastic Base

Finally, all of our tubs come with a molded plastic base that provides complete protection for the whole spa. This layer keeps pests like rodents, snakes, spiders, and wasps from getting into the cabinet of the tub. You also won’t have to worry about wood rot or decay because the plastic base is made of a durable (and beautiful!) material.

Bonus: Hot Tub Covers and Temperature-Resistant Shells

Most tubs use an acrylic surface that is backed by fiberglass. The problem is that these two materials expand and contract at different rates, which can lead to cracks if the hot tub is used outside. We use ABS-backed acrylic, a durable material that contracts and expands at the same rate as the fiberglass to prevent cracking and bacterial growth. Your hot tub will be able to handle the drastic shifts between hot sun and cold temperatures without damage.

We also have a durable cover that is perfect for Colorado weather. Instead of using zippers or stitching that can wear out over time, these covers are completely sealed to keep out moisture, mildew, and bacteria. They have a strong foam core that retains more of the hot tub’s heat and keeps heavy snow from weighing the cover down. The exterior is built to handle Colorado’s sun, snow, and temperature swings.
